NCSPCA Our New Shelter

BIG DREAMS!

After searching for more than three years, the North Country Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NCSPCA) has purchased an 18 acre parcel of land in Elizabethtown. The property will be the site of a new animal shelter to replace the current building in Westport. Located on NYS Route 9N just 1.5 miles west of Northway Exit 31, the new site is convenient to people throughout Essex County.

“The acquisition of this property marks a bright new chapter in the history of the NCSPCA. The current shelter is nearly 40 years old and it’s far too small for the hundreds of abused, abandoned, and surrendered cats and dogs cared for by the NCSPCA each year. However, much more work must be done to realize our dream of a state-of-the-art facility,” said Board President Margaret Reuther of Willsboro.

“We would not have been able to reach this important milestone without the help of many generous and kind supporters. These friends and neighbors understand that our work is essential for a vibrant community,” said Board Vice President Patricia Radcliffe of Keene Valley.

The purchase was made at a live auction August 9, 2008 to settle the estate of Raymond Manley, a beloved resident of Keene Valley and highly respected business man. As anyone who has participated at an auction knows, it can be an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. This was no exception. Board member Dave Logan, our designated bidder, engaged in a rapid exchange of bids with three, then two, then just one other competitor. Ultimately, the winning bid was ours and the seven NCSPCA Board members present celebrated loudly.

Thanks to all who helped us to achieve this first big step in our goal of building a modern and welcoming shelter that will serve the many dogs and cats who find refuge at the NCSPCA as well as the residents of Essex County.
